Á Rebours by JK Huysmans

Book for the day
Though the book is widely believed to have no structure whatsoever, it does tell a relatively simple story. Jean Des Esseintes is the last member of a powerful and once proud noble family. He has lived an extremely decadent life in Paris which has left him disgusted with human society. Without telling anyone, he absconds to a house in the countryside. He fills the house with his eclectic art collection (which notably consists of reprints of paintings of Gustave Moreau. Drawing from the theme of Gustave Flaubert's Bouvard and Pecuchet , Des Esseintes decides to spend the rest of his life in intellectual and aesthetic contemplation. Throughout his intellectual experiments, he recalls various debauched events and love affairs of his past in Paris.
Halfway through Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, the protagonist becomes obsessed with a yellow-bound book. Entranced by its story, which details the life of an eccentric Parisian, Dorian’s descent into depravity quickens. One of Wilde’s interrogators at the infamous trial of 1895 asked him: to which novel had he been referring? And did he agree with the book’s morals? Wilde named À Rebours, by J.-K. Huysmans; he would add nothing more.

Helio OIticica

Very sad news
"RIO de JANEIRO— On October 16, a fire destroyed 90 percent of the estate of Brazilian neoconcretist Helio Oiticica (1937–1980), housed at the artist’s brother César Oiticica's residence in Brazil. The fire consumed an estimated $200 million worth of artwork in the form of 2,000 individual pieces. The artist's works were originally moved to Cesar’s house as a result of disagreements over money and the adequacy of the storage facilities at the Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Cesar’s house was equipped with humidity and temperature controls for the works, as well as working fire alarms and other safety systems. The fire took around three hours to be brought under control. The Brazilian tourism minister has called for an investigation into the causes of the fire and to see whether any works can be recovered.
The works lost in the fire were uninsured, reportedly due to financial issues, and included the artist’s archive of materials, which included drawings, notes, documentaries, and books. Key pieces such as Bólides, Parangolés, and works from the Oiticica’s 2007 exhibitions at the Tate and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston were destroyed. The fire also claimed pictures and film negatives by Brazilian photographer José Oiticica, Helio and César’s father."

Fischerspooner @ Performa 09

In conjunction with the New York performance biennial Performa 09, MoMA’s Performance Exhibition Series presents Between Worlds (2009), an evening-length work by New York artists Fischerspooner. Between Worlds, a pop spectacle developed in support of Fischerspooner’s 2009 album Entertainment, runs continuously over the course of three hours, with no clear beginning or end, on a large central stage that allows the audience to view the piece from all sides. With source material provided by The Wooster Group and with inspirations ranging from Japanese theater to the early years of the U.S. space program, this new performance continues Fischerspooner's interest in exploring the spaces between art and entertainment, reality and fiction, intentions and mistakes.

Mark Leckey in a Long Tail

02/010/09@ Abrons arts center and the magic of things appearing and disappearing
"Part lecture, part monologue, and part living sculpture, the work traverses the history of television and broadcasting, incorporating the role of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and the icon of Felix the Cat, while simultaneously addressing the “long tail” theory of internet-based economics. For the performance, Leckey lectures from inside an installation, which employs a revolving stage that hovers between film set and sculpture."
